Education & Exercise

The Barnet FC Project - Funded by The National League Trust

Education and Exercise is delivered to hundreds of school children across primary schools in Harrow. According to research, only 30% of boys and 25% of girls in Year 4 meet the recommended quota of exercise each day. Such inactivity levels are leading to a variety of issues affecting both physical and mental health.

The Education and Exercise programme is designed to help children develop their physical, cognitive and social skills in a fun and educational way. This is done through The Hive Foundation project Education and Exercise. It is envisaged that by the end of this 6 week project the children will be educated and closely linked to their local Football Club and that the Club itself can welcome a new generation of supporters to The Hive.

The Programme is a bespoke educational programme for children aged between 9-10 that has been developed by The Hive Foundation and St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School in Harrow and is supported by the National League Trust. It is envisaged that by the end of this 6 week project the children will be educated and closely linked to their local Football Club and that the Club itself can welcome a new generation of supporters to The Hive.

To make it work we have written five lesson outlines for you to use with your class. We have attempted to make it as cross-curricular as possible covering subject areas such as:

  • Science
  • Drama (speech, language and communication)
  • Reading
  • PSHE
  • Health and Fitness
  • Economic wellbeing
  • Art and Design
  • Citizenship

The 6th lesson is a visit to The Hive to meet Mr Bumble and the staff.

By combining six weeks of practical sporting sessions with classroom sessions, the programme encourages physical activity, promotes nutritional education and builds awareness of the importance of a balanced diet and active lifestyle. This is the first year of the project and the aim is to deliver to close to 1,000 primary school children in Harrow.

The Hive Foundation & The Edgware Town Centre Community Fund

The Hive Foundation have been delivering after school football sessions in local schools powered by funding received from the Edgware Town Centre Community Fund.
The weekly, one hour sessions are delivered by The Hive Foundation football coaches and provide football activities that enhance both the physical and mental wellbeing of the participants, promoting a healthy lifestyle and fostering a sense of community, teamwork and enhanced social skills. The football sessions provide a structured opportunity for regular physical activity, helping to combat sedentary lifestyles and obesity among children which is on the rise.

David O’Farrell, Head teacher of St Bernadettes Catholic Primary School said: ‘Thank-you very much for providing my Y6 children with this excellent opportunity to receive top quality coaching from The Hive Foundation at Barnet FC. The children are really enjoying the sessions and their skill levels and ability to use them in a match situation are really improving. This will be of great benefit to us as a school as we begin our football competitions this season.

BEE-Fit Communities - Powered by the National League Trust

Bee Fit Communities is a project aimed at increasing the number of local people engaged in regular sporting activity.

This project is part funded by the National League Trust. We are currently delivering two weekly girls only football sessions throughout the academic year encouraging girls to participate in football.

There is a primary and a secondary age group session so we are able to offer football to girls aged 8 to 14. Sessions have a focus on fun, skill development and social interaction, to grow their love for the game.

Bee Fit Communities has also developed player pathways for the participants.  This year we have seen a number of girls progress on to play in local grassroots clubs which is a huge measure of success for this programme.

Alongside the girls only football we also offer weekly walking football sessions for local people aged 50 to 90 years old. We have seen a fantastic turnout for these sessions with up to 80 men and women playing regularly at The Hive.

This session has become a place where people can participate in regular physical activity which benefits mental and physical health and acts as a community social hub for all.
